The Mascoutin Society
Scholarship

The Mascoutin Society of Chicagoland is a non-profit organization whose goals are to preserve American Indian cultures and promote the education of American Indian students. The Mascoutin Society has been in existence since the 1950's and has provided a Grant-in-Aid fund for Native American students in times of need. This scholarship is an additional step by The Mascoutin Society in aiding American Indian students toward their aspirations of a postgraduate education.

The Mascoutin Society is pleased to announce this scholarship to be awarded to American Indian/Alaskan Native students for college/vocational education. This scholarship is intended to recognize a student who gives positive contributions to his/her community and intends on continuing in aiding his/her community after gaining postgraduate education.

The Mascoutin Society Scholarship consists of one $1,000.00 cash award to be used in furthering the recipient’s academic or vocational education. The money will be divided equally per term and will be sent directly to the educational institution of the student’s choice upon verification of enrollment. An alternate for the academic year will be selected in the event the recipient cannot continue his/her education for the second semester.

Requirements:

1. A tribally enrolled Native American member of a federally recognized tribe.

2. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

3. A minimum of nine (9) credit hours per semester.

4. Enrolled in a degree program at an accredited institution.

Judgment Criteria:

1. Applicant attempts by word and deed to live his/her life in service to community.

2. Applicant practices traditional American Indian values.

3. Applicant has the desire to make future contributions to Native American culture after graduation.

Nomination Procedure:

1. Nomination Form and Student Statement-- Address the importance of practicing Traditional Values in everyday life and the importance of serving the community with skills and knowledge attained through postsecondary education.

2. Two (2) letters of recommendation-- A minimum of one letter of recommendation must be obtained from a professional source- teacher, academic advisor, principal, or employer. One letter of recommendation may be from a personal source- family member, friend, or neighbor.

3. Certification of Indian Blood or facsimile copy of tribal enrollment.

Applications are due by May 1 to qualify for the Summer through Spring school year.

The Mascoutin Society of Chicagoland's Scholarship Committee shall make unbiased judgment in awarding this scholarship.  Only the Scholarship Committee Chairperson will know the names of candidates and has no vote in the selection process.  The remainder of the Scholarship Committee will make the selection based upon the written materials sent to the Society with names and other potential distinguishing information removed by the Committee Chair.
